Adult and Youth Outpatient Programs

Our Outpatient Department delivers high quality therapy services to adults, youth, and families using evidence-based practices chosen for the fit and effectiveness with each unique person or family seeking services.  Our trauma-informed clinicians and support staff are committed to empowering those we serve to reach their highest potential and to live their best lives.

Services provided to our Smith Community Mental Health clients are funded through various sources. For those without insurance, funding for services may be provided through contracts we hold with the Children’s Services Council of Broward County, the Department of Children and Families (through Broward Behavioral Health Coalition), and Broward County Human Services. We accept all types of Broward County Medicaid funding, and are willing to negotiate with private insurers who will flex their funding for their insureds.   We also work with families who wish to pay for services and offer a sliding fee scale guided by the family’s income and size.

We have a dedicated point of contact for all programmatic needs. Contact Michael Houghtaling to referral to any of our services.  We provide thorough assessments to determine the best placement for the individuals and families we serve.

Adults with no insurance are eligible for our Broward County funded Outpatient services.  Contact Angela Hood for Broward County grant funded services. Or click Adult Broward County Outpatient Program Flyer for more information.

All Outpatient Program Services

  • Psychiatric Evaluation – a comprehensive evaluation that investigates the client’s clinical status including the presenting problem; the history of the present illness; previous psychiatric, physical, and medication history; relevant personal and family history; personal strengths and assets; and a mental status exam. This evaluation concludes with a summary of findings, diagnostic formulation, including prognosis and treatment recommendations.
  • Medication Management – a collaborative discussion between the psychiatrist and the client and family in which medication is discussed along with the client’s impressions of the effectiveness and side effects of the medications.  There may be a review of relevant laboratory test results and prior pharmacological interventions.
  • Individual and Family Therapy

Our Individual and Family Therapy services utilize evidence-based interventions to ensure effective treatment and positive outcomes for those we serve.  The evidenced based treatments we utilize are: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Alternatives for Families Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Incident Reduction, Emotional Freedom Technique (also known as EFT Tapping), Illness Management and Recovery, Brief Strategic Family Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Transition to Independence Process, and Wraparound Case Management. We are an agency that provides continuous learning for our clinicians and therefore add new treatment interventions regularly, including those that are emerging evidenced based practices.  An example of an emerging practice with evidence of effectiveness utilized by our clinicians is Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS).

  • In Home Therapy –

Individual Therapy and Family Therapy – treatment with goals and interventions chosen by the client or family to address issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, severe mental health issues, behavioral issues, family discord, aggression, and other areas of distress in the life of a family or individual. Sessions can take place in the office, home based, or via telehealth when appropriate.
